Date: From April 27th to May 1st  (11th week)

Purpose: Identify grammar structures in different kinds of texts

 

Basic information:

There are some grammar structures in the foreign language that are different from the grammar structures in our mother tongue. Learning these structures and memorizing them will help us become more fluent and better at communicating our ideas in English; To begin, it is necessary to identify the grammar categories that make up the sentences, because every word in a sentence (parts of the speech) has a specific role. 

The main parts of speech in the English language are: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection Let's see their definitions and some examples:

1. Noun: [naʊn] a word that refers to a personplace, animal, thing,             or substance. For example: Doctor, Stadium, Cat, Desk.

2. Pronoun:[ˈproʊˌnaʊn]  Word  that  is  used  instead  of  a  noun. 

           Pronouns  ususually  refer  to  a  noun  that has already

           been mentioned

           For example: Margareht lives in Canadá, She is a dentist.

3. Verb: [vɝb] [ˈv3ːrb]  Word  that  indicates  the  occurrence  or

         performance of an action,the existence of a state or condition

         For example: Run, Keep, Feel, Want, Rain ...

4. Adjective:[ˈædʒɪktɪv]  Word that describes  a  noun  or  a  pronoun.

             For example: Beautiful, Handsome, Tall, Short, Fat,thin... 

5. Article: [ˈɑrtɪkəl] one  of  a  small  class  of  words  in English, 

            a,  an,  and  the, that  are  linked to nouns and that show

            whether the noun is definite or indefinite.

6. Adverb: [ˈædvɝb] word  that  modifies  or  describes  something about

           verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or clauses.   

           Adverbs  usually    express  some  relation  of  place (here,

           there),  time (now,then),  manner (well, quickly),  degree

           (very, extremely), means, cause, result, etc.

           In English many adverbs have the ending -ly.

7. Preposition: [ˌprɛpəˈzɪʃən] Word  that  is  used before a noun, Or a

                pronoun connecting it to another word.  

                For example: 

                In the sentences "We jumped in the lake", and

                "She drove slowly down the track", "in" and "down" are

                 prepositions.

8. Conjunction: [kənˈdʒʌŋkʃən]  word  that  connects  words,  phrases,

                clauses, or sentences, such as and, because, but, and

                unless

9. Interjection: [ˌɪntɚˈdʒɛkʃən] a word or short phrase used to express

                 emotion, such as Hey! Oh! Ouch! Ugh! Good grief!

                 Indeed!

EXERCISE 1

1. Write  in  your english notebook the following sentences taken from Duolingo Platform

   and write in the parenthesis the corresponding simple tense (present, past of future),

   according to its  grammar structure   :

   

   a. Duo keeps his books in this bookcase. ( Simple present )

   b. Which of these toothbrushes is yours? (                )

   c. She keeps her pens in her desk?       (                )

   d. This is a nice apartment too.         (                )

   e. Where do you keep your bicycle?       (                )

   f. The pink car is not ours.             (                )

   g. They danced very well last night.     (                )

   h. She ate her dinner quickly.           (                )

   i. He rode the white horse.              (                )

   j. It was hot, and we swam all day.      (                )

   k. They Swam so quickly.                 (                )

   l. A little fish swam around me.         (                )

   m. Everything happened so quickly!       (                )

   n. She read the message five minutes ago.(                )

   o. I read the E-mail last night.         (                )

2. Underline the nouns in the sentences.

3. Circle the articles in the sentences. 

4. Highlight with a color pencil the Verbs in the sentences.

5. When you complete this activity in your notebook, take a picture and send it to your

   teacher as an evidence of your work. (send the picture(s) before Monday, May 4th).
